San Blas Islands are located off the northeast coast of Panama in the Caribbean Sea. The archipelago comprises approximately 365 islands and cays scattered about 100 square miles. The islands are part of the semi-autonomous Kuna Yala region, which has a unique political and cultural system.
The islands are home to the Kuna Yala indigenous community, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. With a population of around 50,000 Kunas, their vibrant culture stands as a powerful symbol of resilience—rooted in ancestral customs, a unique language, and deep spiritual traditions that have been proudly preserved over generations.
The Kuna speak their native language, known as Kuna or Dulegaya, which is part of the Chibchan language family. However, many Kunas also speak Spanish and English, especially those in the tourism-related industries.
The San Blas Islands have a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. The dry season runs from December to April, while the wet season is from May to November. The region is also prone to hurricanes and tropical storms during the rainy season, so visitors should check weather forecasts and travel advisories before planning a trip.
